Press Forward, Press Onward

I’m finally getting into a rhythm with writing poetry.

I said this in a previous post, but I really do believe that writer’s block is just the need for a consistent reading practice, an intentional and deep reading practice. I’ve read a few poetry books over the last couple of weeks, and the result has been a greater urge to not only keep reading more poetry (and, therein, purchase more books of poetry), but to keep writing poems. Everything is inspiring me to write now, whether it’s connected to the poetry collection I’m reading or not. And that’s what I wanted to get back to.

And one of the interesting things is that I don’t even have to particularly enjoy the poetry collection I’m reading to derive inspiration from it. I recently finished Wild Gratitude by Edward Hirsch and, while there were some poems that held beautiful language and imagery, I can’t say the collection blew me away like others have. I’m also reading The Collected Poems of Audre Lorde and, goddamn, she is blowing me away. Such gorgeous use of language in poems that, so far, have not been terribly long.

Anyway, it’s a good day when you feel your life is filling with poetry. I have a pretty exciting announcement that I can’t quite talk about yet, but it’s been fueling my continued movement towards and through poetry. Today after work, I’ll be spending time outside in nature finishing Continuity by Cynthia Arrieu-King and then starting Sorrow Arrow by Emily Kendel-Frey. I’ll also be working through The Collected Poems of Audre Lorde; it’s a very long book and is the longer poetry collection I’m reading for the month of June. (Something else I’m doing is making a list of longer collected works of poets and reading one every month, maybe two if it’s an extremely long collection.)

This is a shorter post. Thank you for taking the time to read it.

Love and light!
